[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS does not see some flac files

Hello,

I have edited the tracks of an album I recently bought using Audacity
(flac format). I split each track using the feature 'export multiple' of
Audacity. After rescanning the entire library, one track only appeared
when listing the album in LMS. The displayed track was the first one and
had not been edited. When comparing this track with the (not displayed)
other tracks using metaflac I discovered that Audacity had not created a
seek table in the file it created.
So I created a seek table for every tracks using metaflac again (with
the help of a shell script). Now, after rescanning the library most of
tracks appear when listing the album, however about 20 tracks (on a
total of 84 tracks) are not displayed at all.
Any idea about what might cause the trouble?

messages. Look at the WebUI->Settings->Information page for the file
location.

There are some warnings about playlists but I see nothing related to the
missing tracks. :confused:

I used metaflac --list to display metadata. I saw that all files created
by Audacity had no block of type SEEKTABLE. Not sure that it is a bug.

SEEKTABLE: This is an optional block for storing seek points. It is
possible to seek to any given sample in a FLAC stream without a seek
table, but the delay can be unpredictable since the bitrate may vary
widely within a stream. By adding seek points to a stream, this delay
can be significantly reduced.

Does not seem a likely cause of your issue.

When I have seen missing tracks in an album of flac files, it is
sometimes there are particular characters in the filename or directory
path, so it might be worth checking out the filenames of the missing
tracks. I think that forbidden characters may be different for different
operating systems and filesystems - I try to avoid symbols such as $, #,
?, /, \ and punctuation marks. Having said that, I thought Audacity
screened out such characters when doing 'export multiple'. I have never
used seek points or a seek table.

library has underscores in their name and so far it has not caused any
issue.

Admittedly I'm fishing a bit, but I can't help noticing that is a long
file name. Is it possible some of your files are hitting up against
Windows (assuming Windows is your server) limits on path length?

Linux can do much more than 255 characters in a file path .

Beware of the total path length if you mount a disc under some other
folder.

I usually trim track names to bare minimum as most are in the tags
anyway.

Look out for forbidden characters in the file name in linux is
formexample dot “.” A character for hidden files and
folders and LMS wont see them . But again file and folder names can be
simplified as you have tags .

But didn't OP say the problem remained even when the .dot was replaced?

Let me try one more idea: is it possible the missing tracks are there
but under a different artist/album? Have you loaded the files into a
tag editor (e.g. Mp3tag) to see if there are any inconsistent tags
stopping these files from sorting together?

Then again, since they all came from Audacity's "Export Multiple" they
should have inherited everything but TRACKNUMBER and TITLE tags from the
original file. Can you explain in more detail that initial "splitting"
step in Audacity? I've done this many times when recording vinyl and
not had any issues.

Another thing I'd do is load the "invisible" files into foobar2000 (or
equivalent) and verify their integrity. I don't see any mention in your
posts that these files work as expected in another player, although I
assume you've checked that.

In Linux max lengths are 4096 bytes for the file path and 255 bytes for
the file name (basename).
Dots are not forbidden characters in linux file names. I tried to
replace them by hyphens, but as expected it did not solve the issue.
Also I have other albums the tracks of which have dots in their
filenames, all their tracks are displayed, no issue.

see hidden files.

Sure, no file name in my library has a heading dot. All track names are
of the form: 03-Act_I_Scene_1.3_Duettino_Se_a_caso_madama.flac

Bingo ! Shame on me !!! It's so obvious, it's the first thing I should
have checked first. I don't know why, some tracks had no access right
for anyone apart from the owner (me). I suspect that it is Audacity who
set insufficient access rights when splitting the tracks. I'll check
that as soon as I have a moment.

At the time "Export Multiple" is executed a dialog window is opened for
each new track giving the user the possibility of editing tags.
The album which exhibits the issue is an opera recording. Most of
original tracks contain recitatives and arias together. Sometime I want
to listen to arias only, so I had to split the tracks so that
recitatives and arias are separated from each other. Using Audacity I
added labels at each point in a track where an aria or a recitative
begins. The text I give to the label is the title of the track which
will be created for that piece of music. When all labels have been set
up for a given original track I use "Export Multiple" for creation of
the new tracks (one track for each label).
This works fine when listening to the result (and displaying it) using
all audio tools which I am using, except LMS.

All of this looks good. When you finished splitting all necessary
tracks, did you then load the entire album in order into your tag editor
and auto-number the tracks and generate new filenames? Might not seem
necessary, but can't hurt.

If facing this issue and nothing else working, I'd load all the tracks
into foobar2000 and generate new, clean FLAC (default compression 5).
Lastly, if still a problem I'd strip the files of all tags, rescan, and
play via LMS "Music Folder" just to be sure all tracks play in the
desired order. If so, I'd manually re-enter the tags and try a final
rescan.

Are you running a "Clear library and rescan everything" rescan? Or,
change the folder name slightly if doing a "New/changed" rescan. I've
seen LMS get confused overwriting updated tags when doing a
"New/changed" rescan and end up with some tag fields having multiple
values.

Forgive me if you've done all this. I'm just going through the things
I'd try if I had no idea how else to solve this problem! If LMS is not
indexing some of your files, it has to be related to filename or tags.
There isn't much else.

OK, there is something else: in LMS "Settings" go to "Advanced" >
"Performance" and set "Maximum Playlist Length" to 0. Also, look at the
"Filter" options on the "My Music" tab and see if they make sense. You
might post a screenshot of these two tabs so others can offer
suggestions.

I could check that *it is not Audacity* which writes my flac files with
wrong permissions.
It's either one of my metaflac scripts or Easytag. I still have to check
that.
