Discussion:
Exporting Favorites Logitech Media Server

Every time the media sever software is updated, the "Favorites" list is
lost. Again.

Given that when editing you can import, why is there no export
functionality?

40000 plus tracks to go through here and three children adding to
favorites = three upset kids with every upgrade and a loss of
favorites.

Yes I know how to find and copy the OPML file... (Windoze XP)=
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Squeezebox\prefs\favorites.opml

Such a simple task is so very hard; The favorites list should be
automatically backed up, IMO

:(

Me either, and I do a complete uninstall of LMS then load the new LMS,
keeps all of my Favorites and LMS server settings just fine on WinXP.
After running uninstall a window pops up "do you want to delete
settings and preferences", just select NO.

agree. but I also save a copy of "favorites.opml" separately. I can use
this for importing into favorites of other SbS/LMS installs or as a
backup if needed. To import, go into LMS, click on the little "pencil"
icon to right of Favorites. This puts you in edit mode. Toward bottom is
"import". Click on this, browse to the location of "favorites.opml",
select it, close the browse to file window, then click "import". All
done with all your favorites listed.

Yes m8, this is where I am saying there should be an "export" button!

....what you describe is the only way I don't loose the list?
Well, what I described is a complete uninstall of LMS on WinXP, in that
case yes.
Just updating LMS (not actually uninstalling LMS first) should not
delete that Favorites.opml.
Why either would not work for you I don't know. :)

Keep in mind when you do the complete uninstall you *must* wait for
that last pop-up window, and it might take several minutes to appear.
1'st window will say "LMS was successfully uninstalled"
2'nd window will say "do you want to delete all settings &
preferences", select NO.

Thanks but no Sue, nothing extra?

However the update option via the systray never works (some error about
C++ not being installed even though it is installed?) And I have to
update via the control panel.

Still at the end of the day, if the problem is local to my machine,
there is no simple export method for the favo(u)rites list that I can
find?

not a button I agree, but there is a simple method. Just copy and save
the "favorites.opml" file and them import after install (or simply
replace the new "empty" favorites.opml file with your old one.

Ta garym. Simple if you're computer literate ;)

The opml file was never found using the search function. But I am a
little tech savy and found it drilling down in the right folders. I
recently created a short cut to the file stored with my backup
routines, and copy the file to several external hard drives (one off
site).

However for the noobs and the technophobic (and those without the time
to search) there should be an export button. Both export/import
functions should be more obvious than below the edit pencil, again IMO?

As an aside, remembering that you should assume your computer will fail
and consequently backup as often as you feel required ie I backup
certain files daily, others weekly, some monthly and others not at all,
relevant to their importance (to me) and frequency of use etc.

The favorites list I should have been backing up daily given the number
of users in this house and that the squeezebox is always playing
randomly, thus exposing young users to new tunes!

My fault...

(You should be able to export the favorites and the settings via the
one button. Again IMO)
I agree with your idea of an export button. Of course, posting here on
this forum is just users talking to other users. To get the attention
of the developer, it would be great if you could add an enhancement
request at
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/

And post back the bug link here so people can then vote on it. This is
the only official way to get the developers' attention. (Note, you can
mark something as an enhancement request rather than a "bug" in your
bug posting there.)

I can only suggest a workaround, and it is pretty simple, you will
simply be creating a shortcut.
I have to do this for my laptop mapping & gps software to quickly clear
out saved map pins, routes, gps trails, etc...

I only use WinXP so if you are using a Mac or NAS you will have to find
out how to do this on (for) those systems.

On your My Computer navigate to your LMS (SqueezeBox) folder on your C
drive containing the Favorites.opml file, note where it is located.
Mine is located at: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Squeezebox\prefs

On your desktop simply do a right click, New > Create Shortcut, a
simple pop-up screen will navigate you through the next two steps,
Browse & Name.
It will have you Browse to that folder location, now name your shortcut
like "LMS Favorites", you are done.

Now before any LMS update click that shortcut, copy the Favorites.opml
file, do your LMS update, paste that file back in that same location,
reboot LMS.

After some sound advice (pun intended ;) in this thread, I have posted
an enhancement request at Bugzilla for export/backup functionality
within LMS...

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17827

Garym perhaps I should have asked first, whether it's best practice to
post the bugzilla link within the thread or is it best to start a new
thread?

Is there an OPML file I can copy that contains the LMS (7.4.1)
settings/preferences?

Thanks for all the help all...

voted. might also help to create a new thread with title something
like "Vote on Export Favorites Enhancement" then put the link in the

not sure about OPML file containing all preferences. I know I've seen
some messages talking about entire subdirectories to backup but haven't
paid that much attention....

I'm pretty sure the server & plugin prefs files are in the same location
I listed above.
Maybe just cut & paste that entire SqueezeBox/prefs folder which
already includes the Favorites.opml file.
