Discussion:
Napster - sometimes no sound on some players

Hi Folks

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question - not sure
whether my Napster problem is Napster or SBS. Problem is that I will
start a Napster album playing via SBS, and the first track(s) will play
fine on all my players (2 wireless Booms, 1 wired Boom and 1 wired
Classic). Then at some point (haven't found any pattern yet) a next
track will only play (as in sound) on one of the players (a wired Boom),
although the other players display the track info. A few tracks later
all players will then start to play sound again.

I'm running 7.4.3 (latest build) on Windows Server 2008 R2, and ripped
music and internet radio play fine. I can't see any relevant error
messages in server.log. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Cheers - Graham

Just in case it helps anyone else, I think the mention of Napster is a
red herring. I think the real problem is when starting (any) music from
the web interface of SBS rather than from a player directly.

Anyone else found this?

Are you syncing with any software players at all - Squeezeplay or the
Controller in particular?

If so, there is a recently fixed bug which may be relevant (although it
ought to impact whether you are selecting tracks on the player or the
web interface, so may not be relevant to you):

If not, I wonder if this is related to the number of players you are
syncing (if I understand correctly you are syncing 4 players?).
Services like Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, etc. all send individual
streams for each track. This is the same whether or not you get one
stream from the source and proxy it via a local Squeezebox Server, or
whether each player gets its own stream directly from the source as is
the case when using mysqueezebox.com.

Rhapsody has a max 3 streams limit IIRC - I wonder if Napster is the
same? If you just try on 2 players - do you see the same behaviour?

Thanks for those thoughts - very interesting. I do have a Controller,
and I am syncing to 4 players. Do I understand correctly that if I have
4 players I would have 4 separate Napster streams for each track? I
haven't had time to run any tests yet but the problem is only
intermittant - most of the time all players will play and only
sometimes will only one of them be the only player to make any sound.

If there are four separate streams could the problem be a broadband
bandwidth issue? I live in a rural area and most of the time my
connection is below 1 Mbps.

Yes, Napster serves up separate streams (see post below from the guy who
did a lot of the sync work in the software) - could well be a bandwidth
issue.

Yes but that tread is about syncing without an local server ? or i'm
wrong about this, for ordinary web-radio the streams are proxied when
synced, if you have a local server (all SB's share the same stream via
server).
Without local server every player must have it's own stream.

Main hifi: SB3 (soon to replaced by a Touch :) It is on preorder)
Bedroom/Office: Boom
Kitchen: Receiver (soon to be replaced by my SB3 and the SBR to be
stuffed in a box in the attic )
Miscellaneous use: Radio (battery pack to be ordered)
I use a Controller various ir-remotes and a Eee-PC with squeezeplay to
control this

I have to confess I'm a bit confused now. I'm making my Napster choices
either from my Controller or the SBS browser interface, so SBS is
handling my request for me? The other thread seems to imply that if I'm
using SBS it will proxy one stream. So rather than 1 stream for each of
my 4 players I have 1 stream for SBS which gets farmed out to the 4
players?
