[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Logitech Media server 7.8 scanning problems.

Hello everyone.

I am looking for some problem solving answers because I have a scanning
problem with Logitech Media server 7.8 that's running on my NAS a thecus
N2200xxx with firmware V5.03.02.

The media server runs and the client can play the music except when I
start to scan, the scanning just hangs. Its sees the directories it
starts to scan it sees the first album and stops / hangs scanning.

I have the warning sign on the Nas/ module installation that this module
may not work properly due to the old FW version. I have the latest
version of the firmware I could find for this Nas. So I cant change
that.

How can I solve this problem?? Did I forgot something or did I screwed
up some where?? I am a novice. Thank you for the help.

Paul.

The values "(?, ?, ?)" look suspicious.
Perhaps an audio file has corrupted meta data.

Are there any clues from the lines before this in the scanner log file
that show which file it was working on?

Has it ever worked ?

I didn't know that a thecus N2200xxx was a supported NAS. If it is I
would expect dependency issues would raise their ugly head on a very
regular basis and upgrades would be a no no.

If I was you.

I would buy a Pi3 starter kit from Amazon (£40). Install picoreplayer on
it with LMS. Give it a fixed IP. Mount your NAS drive via smb. Point LMS
at the mount and off you go. Switch off LMS on the thecus N2200xxx. Only
caveat - both pi & NAS need to be wired.

Use the NAS for what it is good at (serving files) and use the Pi as
your LMS server with a fully up to date working version of the software
and optionally as a player as well.

The Pi is more than capable of running as a server and will also allow
Spotify to work. It probably won't on your NAS.

I just copied the logs. I don't have much understanding of this. For me
it looks like there is a problem with the SQL data base but I don't have
a clue how to solve it.

It worked in the beginning but after I added a other 100 cd's to the nas
music folder and had t scan again it failed.

PS. What condition is the Capri ?
My network is wired and I don't need Spotify. I was hoping to use the
nas as a server. I used the file that was intended for a thecus N5200.
If I recall correctly, it came from this forum.

And the capri v8 is in beter than new condition:D

You will find very few NAS that support the latest versions of LMS.
There is a (semi official?) build for Synology that seems well
maintained and there are unofficial methods of installing on a QNAP but
other than that they are few and far between. The Thecus is not really
mainstream is it? So I would expect support for LMS to be worse than
Synology or QNAP.

I used to run LMS on QNAP but dropped the idea when it became apparent
that updates were going to be very difficult. I still keep my files on
the QNAP though and run LMS on a separate box - production version is an
old Dell server running a hacked Vortexbox with an NFS mount to the
QNAP. I have various Pi's that I also employ as LMS servers for testing
various things. I will move fully to a Pi when I have finished a
re-ripping project. I will always keep the files on the NAS though.

Do you show the Capri?
And is it a South African Perana, or an one-off conversion?

it a custom. I did build serveral Capri v8's. But this one is the first
I build and I own it for 24 years now and is not for sale.

Maybe I should install a different media player like plex?

Very nice Capri.

Plex is great for videos etc but not a ptach on LMS for audio.

If you want to persevere with the Thecus then I would troubleshoot as
follows

Remove all music files.
Add them back in blocks of 10 CDs to start with and rescan.
If LMS borks on the first 10 then it sounds like your db is screwed but
delete them and try a different 10 to be sure.
If it accepts and scans any OK then you probably do have a corrupted
music file or two somewhere.

Also make sure you have scanning for videos switched off (unticked).

I took a slight different approach and made a new folder and copied 10
cd's into it. Pointed the LMS to the new folder and it scanned the
albums without any problem. I added a other 10 cd's and did a rescan and
now it keeps hanging. I removed the last 10 cd's and did a rescan and it
still keeps hanging.

I'd suggest that after the initial scan the db file becomes locked for
some reason - hence it can't be opened on the second scan - but you
really need Michael Herger to cast his eye over the log file to tell you
what is going on.

Trust me though that running LMS on something different and pointing it
at your NAS will work and is the way forward as more or more NAS become
incapable of running LMS without significant (and in some cases risky)
modifications. The scanning is also infinitely quicker and transcoding
is more stable/reliable with something that has a decent processor.

Thanks d6jg.

So it does look that is a problem with the DB. Lets hope Michael Herger
joints in to this topic.

Unfortunately the question "has it ever worked?" has not been answered yet.

Can you work on the NAS command line? I'd start by deleting the
library.db. Check where the cache folder is located in
Settings/Information. Then restart LMS. If the file itself was corrupted
this would sort it out.

Then make sure your file system has enough free disk space. Once you've
figured out the cache folder's location run "df -h" and compare whether
the cache folder is on a partition with plenty of disk space.

Check the cache folder: are there huge files you might want to remove,
eg. all the *.db files? You can safely delete them, they would be
rebuilt upon next start.

Thank you Micheal for joining in.

Yes it did scan in the beginning but I only did it ones as I did not add
any new cd's. The Nas has 2 TB of space. That would/should be more than
enough to store my +/- 1000 cd's collection.

Never done it in Linux. I am a complete novice at Linux.

That's only part of the story. The cache folder might be located in a
place outside this large partition. Just verify it. Guessing isn't good
enough: what does Settings/Information say about the cache folder?

I remember this scenario. My first venture into LMS was with a QNAP
TS109. I still have it as a working secondary by NAS but gave up running
LMS on it when I realised that I didn't (at that stage) know enough
about Linux to easily upgrade it from its stock 7.6.1. I did at one
stage manage to get it to 7.7.5 but when everyone was talking about all
the features in 7.9.x I looked at alternatives.

Given that Capri has no Linux skills and this is a lesser known NAS I
think a rethink is required. I restate that a Pi pointed at the NAS is
easy and doesn't require any Linux knowledge - only the ability to grasp
some concepts and ask the right questions.

This is pretty much what I did - migrated from an Ubuntu PC that I
didn't want to have running 24/7 to a two-bay QNAP running LMS. Owing to
a bunch of issues around the BASH vulnerability and SSOTS no longer
being maintained, and the fact that the QNAP software updates sometimes
affected software such as LMS, I switched to a Pi3 as a server, with the
files on the QNAP. It works very well and was really easy to set up.
There's also a benefit to using something a bit more mainstream and
supported (piCorePlayer has a very active thread in these forums).

Thank you. I will get back on it in a few days. Maybe sooner. I have to
finish a project before Thursday. I have most of the work done today,
but there is still a few little things I need to sort out and as always
those little things can turn in to be very time consuming.

I want to thank you all for your help.

I did find the problem and for now it seems to scan correct again. It
seams MySQL_5 installed on the nas was the problem. I stopped the
service fryday because there was no use for it and when the nas started
Saturday morning Logitech media server automatically rescanned the
folder with the albums and now its working.

Let hope it stays this way.

Thanks Paul.
