Discussion:
[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] How is LMS on Raspberry Pi 2

I've been using LMS on my main Win7 PC for a few years now. It's not on
24x7, turned on when I need to use it.

I'd like to move LMS off the main PC so I can mess around with the PC
without interfere with LMS. I'd also like to leave it on 24x7 so I don't
have to turn it on when I need to listen to music. Currently my music
files are on the PC, but I can easily move it to my NAS so it's
accessible remotely.

I am thinking about using a RPI2 for this purpose. Is it fast enough to
run LMS with reasonable speed? It's cheap, does not use a lot of power
(so leave it on 24x7 is no problem), and small footprint. But I am
wondering if it'll be fast/powerful enough to run LMS.

Anyone using Pi as their LMS? Any feedback on performance?

Are there better alternatives for running LMS besides the pi? Thanks.

I've not used a Pi2 to run LMS, but I do use a Pi3, with music files
held on a NAS. I use piCorePlayer for this purpose. It works splendidly.
I use either the web page interface on a laptop or SqueezePad or similar
apps on tablets and phone to control it.

I use an rpi 2 running max2play as my main LMS server (I cannot manage
to make my qnap nas run the youtube plugin). It's fine apart from a bit
of latency now and again: and I am running it on wifi with the files on
the NAS (wired) and 2 SBT's as the players, also on wifi. It would
almost certainly work better if wired.

I imagine that an rpi 3 would be a bit sprightlier but if you have a 2
lying around, it will do the job.

Use a rpi3 instead.

one big issue of the rpi is -> its writing to sdcard and they didnt
least as long as a hard disk.
but these cards are cheap.

Hi wildgoose,
Our installs of Max2Play's LMS instance (7.9 nightly) have run
successfully and without problems for long periods of time, both on the
RPi2 and on the RPi3. As DJanGo mentioned, the Pi3 would be preferable.
However, a Pi 2 model B can get the job done, too. Feel free to check
out our images. The download and the Squeezebox Server installer are
both free.

But isn't one of the advantages of piCorePlayer that it doesn't write to
the SD card once the system is loaded?

i dont think a RPI would do that better :):p

Bob talks about piCorePlayer, which is only a client software. The OP
was asking about installing the server -- LMS in this case -- on a RPi.
Two completely different things.

And yes, LMS writes to the SD card. piCorePlayer does not, it resides in
the RAM.

Hi wortgefecht,

We added LMS as an add-on to piCorePlayer a while ago now, its still
called piCorePlayer though which can be confusing.

I have been using LMS on RPi1B and RPi2B for years. It works fine for me
(all 44.1/16) but if you resample, do a rescan, select random, you may
have interruptions.

Greg

Hi pippin,

I believe Slimserver, perl etc is in RAM and the cache/data is stored on
SD card or USB/network drive.

I guess on small LMS installs we could put cache/data in RAM, and write
to permanent storage only once.

Thanks everyone! Lots of good suggestions! I haven't fiddled much with
my setup. Looks like there are new things I know little about. :)

I have a pi2 that's running rasPLEX client. Works fairly well for
playing movies. But it doesn't support h265 codec and no dts-ma
passthrough, so I am thinking of upgrading that to something like odroid
c2. If I do, then I have a spare pi2 that I can use for squeezebox
server.

So, Max2Play is an OS for Pi that allows web control? and I can install

the music is. Tried to use the demo but doesn't work behind company
firewall.. will have to try it at home.

piCorePlayer is easier to understand for me. I thought I saw some
reference about being able to run LMS on piCorePlayer, but wasn't sure.
Thanks for confirming.

My music collection is not that big, and everything, including my 2 SB
player, is hard wired. So hopefully performance will be reasonable. A
few years ago I tried SB Server on ReadyNas Duo, it was dog slow compare
to my i7, so I stopped using it for that purpose.

Regarding possible SD corruption for running these services, is there a
way I can redirect some of those log/db locations to the NAS?

LMS and if you want) squeezelite install from the Max2play menu. It can
install lots of other things too including other audio server/players
and KODI. But if you only want it for LMS it's very straightforward.

You have a NAS!
Run LMS on Pi2 - either picoreplayer or max2play - but point it at your
NAS for storage. This is easy to do with either distro and if both the
Pi & NAS are wired then it will work brilliantly.

We have our own web interface that is accessible on any device connected
to your local network by just typing "max2play/" into the device's
browser (you can of course rename the device and use that name to access
it or just use the IP address). Here is a' demo of what it looks like'
(http://demo.max2play.com:81/) and the plugins we have. Squeezelite, the
player, comes preinstalled in one instance, but you can add as many more
players as you like with our' premium plugin MultiSqueeze'
(https://www.max2play.com/en/portfolio/plugin-multisqueeze/) and feed
them to several outputs. The Squeezebox Server is a one-click installer
of the version 7.9 nightly that runs perfectly smooth and has been
running on some of our test devices for a long, long time without any
problems. So I would not put too much emphasis on the possible SD card
corruption which has very rarely ever occurred in with our images, the
card should however be Class 10 or higher. We also included all the
great plugins for the LMS supporting Spotify, Google Music, DSD support,
AirPlay, DLNA, etc. and we also integrated the 'great Jivelite GUI'
(https://www.max2play.com/en/features/jivelite/) if you want to connect
a screen to control your devices.
Also, regarding your NAS, as mentioned above, its very easy to mount a
NAS share and use it for the LMS. Here is a 'youtube video'
I made of our Filesystem
Mount plugin that shows you its capabilities. While some of the
features, like MultiSqueeze, are premium to keep our project going, the
Squeezebox Server installer, the Squeezelite player and the Filesystem
Mount plugin are ' completely free as are all our images which can
download' (https://www.max2play.com/en/max2play-image/) from our
website.

If your happy to cut and paste you can manage without either of the two
mentioned OS, just go here,

Just tried piCorePlayer. Pretty nice! Figured out how to install LMS and
mount a network share. LMS response (settings, etc) with an empty music
collection is pretty fast! :)

Noticed a few critical issues:

1) Please mask out password in the LMS/Setup Network Disk Mount page.

2) Please mask out password in the main about page, in advanced mode,
where it lists /usr/local/sbin/config.cfg.

This page can be seen without any authentication. It shows NAS password
in clear text!!

Setup an account on the NAS that has r/w access solely to the Music
share and use that.

I do agree that aspect of PcP could be improved on.

What is the playing performance like? I find it perfectly acceptable on
a host of players both synced and otherwise. Scanning is almost as quick
as a dedicated PC and much quicker than when running LMS on the NAS.
Over the weekend I tried both piCorePlayer and Max2Play. Max2Play feels
a bit too heavy for my pi2, so I settled on piCorePlayer. It's very
lean/mean, and runs LMS quite well. My music collection is about 3k
songs, it handled it very well. I have 2 squeezebox (Classic and Touch),
all wired, not wireless.

A friend of mine asked me to compare the performance of the piCorePlayer
(HDMI) vs the original SB (optical). I told him my ears are not as
golden. ;) but, while setting it up, I did some quick test.

I wasn't expect to hear much difference, HDMI is digital, so is optical.
BUT, what I have noticed is the volume on HDMI out via piCorePlayer is a
few db higher than optical from SB. Has anyone else noticed this?

Another piCorePlayer question. On the LMS, how do I copy a file to the
LMS folder, and have it retain its content across reboot? Some of my
songs have Chinese tag information. When I was using LMS on my Windows
machine, I simply copy arialuni.ttf to the SB Graphics folder, and my SB
classic would show Chinese characters correctly. How do I do this with
piCorePlayer? I think the FS is read-only and in memory, not sure how to
modify the version on the SD...

Thanks.

Understand. I think it's a good start to not have a cache partition that
permanently gets written to.
Long term the recommendation still probably should be to not do too many
rescans, I think you can't to avoid having artwork caches written to
disk because they can easily grow to GBs and are permanently written to,
maybe it would be good to be able to move hers things to external
storage somehow if the music is not also stored on the SD.

Why not run LMS on the NAS itself? If you are just serving files, there
may be more than adequate CPU cycles . . .

And if you are moving the music files to the NAS, you know it will be
on! ;)

And if you are moving the music files to the NAS, you know it will be
on! ;)
My NAS is a bit too old. I tried LMS on it before, even with local
files, the response time just isn't great. The pi2 seems much better,
both in its UI, as well as the LMS UI. So far quite happy with the
setup. If and when I replace my NAS, I'll definitely reevaluate whether
it's suitable for LMS.
