Discussion:
[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Some FLAC albums won't play on LMS

Out of my over 10k albums indexed on LMS, there are a few that won't
play on LMS. When I try to play them, it would display an error message
saying "Can't open file for...". The files themselves seem pretty
normal. They're 16/44 files, with metadata displayed perfectly on LMS,
and play fine directly on my computer on my phone, but won't play via
LMS to Squeezelite or to the computer or phone via LMS DLNA plugin. I
tried rescanning the whole library and it does not seem to be an
indexing issue. I normally set LMS to transcode flac to wav (for a
slight SQ benefit), but when I set it to play flac natively, the files
would play. I can't see why these particular files can't be
transcoded.

Any idea what could be causing that?

Thanks.

You should post a server log. When you mention LMS DLNA plugin, do you
mean UPnP bridge? If you do, can you post a bridge log as well?

Hi, Phillipe.

I didn't post a server log because there was no error listed in it. As
for the UPnP bridge, I just used it briefly for troubleshooting to see
if it is the renderer's problem or the server's problem. I usually just
use LMS to play to an SOTM SMS-100 which runs Squeezelite.

Thanks.

Even when activating transcoding/player streaming logs?

And you've stopped transcoding to wav to see if it's the software decode
step that's failing .. ? .. (which should be inaudible unless you are
utterly mangling the sample rate or bit depth during this transcode
step).

Yes, set to playing flac natively, those files play fine. As for the
audibility issue, transcoding to wav does seem to sound slightly better
(although there's no strong reason why. Perhaps playing flac strains the
renderer more than playing wav?), and apparently I'm not the only one
who hears that way.

IIRC This possibility was tested on Touch. CPU load is higher when
playing WAV than Flac possibly because of higher network traffic, more
packets, less space for buffering etc.

WAV is less compressed than FLAC (about 2 to 3 times larger typically),
so WAV will use more network traffic, with more packets, and less space
for buffering. FLAC will be much easier on the I/O subsystem (network or
disk if reading directly), and will only require more CPU (although with
less input data it may end up being a wash).

type of tag, or are set to a different bit depth or sample rate from the
others. I'm not going to comment on the audibility, I've been using
spdif for years and don't rely on the built in DACs.

there shouldn't be any reason at all, but I've been using spdif for

BTW, FYI, I'm playing through an SOTM SMS-100 running squeezelite
(connected to network switch with CAT7 cable, LMS running on a QNAP NAS
connected to the same switch), with its USB output connected to an
Esoteric K-03 as DAC.
I retried a back to back listening test between going flac direct and
wav transcoded this morning. There is still a subtle but audible
difference (though I do acknowledge that there's hardly any technical
reason for this), but whether it's better or worse either way would
probably be down to listener's preference. untranscoded is slightly
warmer and transcoded is slightly more open. The difference seems to be
much less than what I remembered during the days when I was using an SBT
as the renderer. I'm leaving it on FLAC direct for now to see if I can
"live with it" in the longer run, and save the trouble with the problem
tracks.

Thanks again.

I can't see why these particular files can't be transcoded.
Enable logging player.source to DEBUG to see why transcoding is failing
(i.e it will show which rules failed).

Enable logging player.source, note time at start of test, do test, note
time at end of test. Copy ALL log entries between start and end time to
a text file, zip and attach to a post. Use a hard or soft player but
not a bridge to avoid complications.

I wonder if your transcode is resampling? That would be the one and only
reason it might sound different.

-Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk-
Exact resampling can be setup in varius ways trough SoX diffrent
filterslopes and actually some margins added can change the volume.

But the typical disable native flac in lms does nothng that advanced .

Then there is RG tags they disapear , so if the player supports
replaygain like the Touch do volume diff can be huge WAV being louder .
But you can also disable the whole RG funktion in LMS with a setting .

But it is bizzare that smenflac files wont play.

I would flac encode them again using aproved flac tools to level -5 and
have a look at the tags.
There was some tools the past that produced very odd flac files with
compressionratios beyound -8 this os not well supported .

What are OP using to rip these files ?

Regarding tags only keep the vorbis comments id3v tags should not be in
flac files .

IF OP is doing sigthed tests then there is the usual human perceptual
errors and biases involved( that we cant escape none of us ).
So it’s only telling us about the personal experience in that moment not
whats relly is going on.

Some suggestions over at

Regarding "corrupt" files ... according to that thread some of the tools
and a self-promoting tag to the newly generated file - so not really
corrupting and you could remove the tag with other tools (or try one of
the other tools in that thread that do not appear to add stuff).

Hi all,
Here is the log during failed playback of the files which are otherwise
playable when playing flac direct and not transcoded.
I also did a little testing by converting those flac files to flac again
using Foobar. While Foobar reported corrupt files after converting,
those new files actually play fine on LMS even when transcoded.
Interesting.
Thanks.

Sorry, I'm not good at all with this Linux stuff. So, can you please be
more specific as to what is wrong and what exactly I am supposed to do?

Thanks.

I don't know what's wrong. My guess is the transcoding command line is
failiing for some reason. To test this theory, run the following
command from a shell prompt and see if it produces an error message. If
it runs OK it will generate a RAW file called test.raw

Code:
--------------------

"/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/LogitechMediaServer/SlimServer/Bin/i386-linux/flac" -dc --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed -- "/share/Multimedia/Music/Art Farmer And The Jazz Giants/FLAC - Art Farmer_And The Jazz Giants/12.Downwind.flac" >test.raw

Hi.

I tried inputting that command on a terminal started with Winscp. As
soon as I entered, a swirling circle came up for a while and then it
says it lost connection. Probably more about me doing something wrong
with the test than the actual outcome of the test?

As devils' advocate - it could also indicate there is something odd in
your network more likely the command wasn't entered correctly e.g.
misplaced/unmatched quote chars, line too long for window or even it is
a version of the same error that happens when you try to play the track
on LMS.

Hi all,
I also did a little testing by converting those flac files to flac again
using Foobar. While Foobar reported corrupt files after converting,
those new files actually play fine on LMS even when transcoded.
Interesting.
Thanks.
..So there could be something up with the files themselfs , actually
interesting . how did you get those files in tyhe first place.

Thanks for the advice. I took extra care inputting the command and was
able to have it executed on the problem track as well as on a normal

Here is the output of the problem track:

The simple way just to check if the file can be decoded by the LMS Flac
is to use the "-t" option.

And I've seen worse. I never really bothered how and under which

Btw is there any tools invoved making per track flac files from one big
album flac file with cue sheet ?
I have learned that one should use cue-tools flacon or anything but
”medieval cue splitter” that tool. n corrupt the files ?
Foobar2000 will do this.

I had to write some scripts to load id3 tag data and rewrite it back as
vorbis tags. One or two older taggers defaulted to id3, I don't use
those now.

Between minuses converted to "long dash", quotes lost in translation and
line breaks becoming, well, line breaks, there are a large number of
ways this command might not make it intact to where you want it to be
run.

However I'd also question winscp's terminal behaviour, I've never
actually used that so don't know its semantics. The connection should
not drop even if the remote shell is very busy (which it would be.. very
busy transcoding the file).

On WinSCP terminal mode. If it’s been set up correctly you right click
on the connection name and do “Open in Putty” and it opens Putty. There
is no other terminal that I am aware of but I could be wrong.

This is OT - the OP got command line OK and has tested the file. Problem
is restricted to specific files.

wrt Putty - Unlike X - Windows windowing system was not designed to be
remote from PC. A long time ago Citrix had licensed access to Windows
source code and so did original remote clients. A lot of later Windows
remote clients were implemented using the pixels of a windows display.
Not sure how today's remote tech works but MS keeps tight control.

Not sure what you mean use Putty and then work around it. It is a remote
ssh connection and so functionality is that of Windows command prompt
but is accessible from all OS's that support ssh and it's security is
known.
Without paying for additional s/w, to do a GUI connection to a Windows
system I think you need a second Windows system and then use Windows
Remote Desktop Connection - security used to be a bit dodgy - I'd hope
it's better nowadays .

Sorry, keeping it OT.
Some alternatives (only used WSL up to now):
- Microsoft is now providing an OpenSSH implementation:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/powershell/2017/12/15/using-the-openssh-beta-in-windows-10-fall-creators-update-and-windows-server-1709/
- Microsoft's Windows Subsystem for Linux allows you to install certain
Linux distributions directly on Windows:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10
- MobaXterm, a 3rd party Windows app: https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/

They work on other aplications .

They dont work on LMS .

They work if you recode them to new flac files .

Files are not entirerly OK but at what level should LMS scan reject them
?

I didn't follow all of the discussion... but hasn't there in the past
been an issue if flac files were compressed at a high level? Could this
be the case here?

It's a bit more complicated natively they played fine .

It's when transcoding to wav/pcm they don't work , until you reecode
them to flac again.

So OP has 2 working solutions already .

Play them natively .

Reflac the offending files , which where not to many, most of his files
works just fine.

If these files represents some general case they migth be worth looking
at ? or is it just another corner case , I don't know .

Oh, that might be the reason why I missed most of this thread. "Doctor,
doctor! When I slap my head, it hurts!" - "Then don't slap your head.".

Yeah I totally get that :) but the same transcoding route could be
invoked in a more reasonable situation, for perfectly good reasons .

The upnp bridge or airplay etc comes to mind .

In this case it’s also “the NAS factor” it can be a peculiarity that
only happens on a certain QNAP
