[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS Won't Play MP3 Exported From Audacity

Not sure what to make of this. I recorded some music with Audacity &
then exported it to 320k CBR. It plays in the car, on the mobile, in
Windows but won't play in LMS. LMS goes through the motions of playing
with the track progress bar ticking along as usual but no sound.

Any ideas?

You could turn up the diagnostics in LMS and see what the server log
shows.
You could try playing it with something else that can generate lots of
diagnostic info - perhaps ffmpeg.
Or make a 10 second version that exhibits the problem and then make that
file available for others to look at.

Nothing in the log but problem solved. Found a 10-year-old reference to
Windows Media Player not liking recordings in Audacity at 48KHz. Drop
Audacity down to 44.1KHz & all is well. Yet for some bizarre reason
48KHz is still the Audacity default.

No idea why that's a problem for LMS & not assorted other players
though. Maybe Michael can shed some light?

Coincidentally, yesterday I’d just created two 48KHz MP4/AAC files that
wouldn’t play. I was about to start converting those to 41KHz, as youve
discovered.

Luckily the MP3 can be pulled back into Audacity at 44.1KHz &
re-encoded, without having to re-record. Result as I didn't keep the
WAV!

48kHz AAC shouldn't be a problem all BBC streams are 48kHz AAC and play
OK on all player . There are many MPEG4 options which are not supported
so the problem might be the wrapping and not the content.

I see. I'm far from versed in this area.

Can you take a look at these tracks:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zmttppqxjt5enix/AACKAAjTo4b_3FDhih_GVObla?dl=0

These were created from some publicly available web videos. I wanted
only the audio for my wife and so converted them to m4a. All of my
players except LMS play them w/out issues. I'll leave the tracks up
for a short while.

They play without problem for me on a raspberry pi/squeezelite and a

I should have mentioned I'm on macOS 12.14.1, iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch,
Late 2015). That may be the difference we see.

Looks like the same issue. I don't have iTunes so converted one of your
files to MP3. Still wouldn't play in LMS.

Opened with Audacity, changed to 44.1KHz & exported & it plays fine.

least there shouldn't be. Which player do you have?

It's probably a macOS LMS server-specific issue then.

The MP4 issue has nothing to do with the MP3 issue - the commonality of
48kHz was a red herring seemingly tying them together. Unless that
poster provides a copy of the problem MP3 file - there is little to do.

Other have had this MP4 issues (mdat at head of file) with podcasts.
There has been a few other cases where "incompatible" MPEG4 packaging
have preventing file from playing on native AAC player but generally
play when transcoded with faad,.

Now the MP4 issue has been dealt with, the OP may be able to give more
info on their MP3 problem.

IIRC There MP3 encoding options which are incompatible with some LMS
players (e.g. some sample rates, some 1ch setups) - the easiest way to
find the problem would be with a copy of the file.

Agree. For what it's worth I exported a file from Audacity as mp3 48kHz
320kbps Joint Stereo and it played fine.

Yesterday, I had converted the test files I posted. These worked:

Code:
--------------------

$ file ./Music/Sade/*.mp3
./Music/Sade/The Big Unknown (from Widows).mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.3.0, contains:MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 128 kbps, 48 kHz, JntStereo
./Music/Sade/Flower of the Universe (from A Wrinkle in Time).mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.3.0, contains:MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 128 kbps, 48 kHz, JntStereo

--------------------

These test files do not:

Code:
--------------------

$ file test/*
test/Sade - Flower of the Universe (From Disney’s A Wrinkle in Ti.m4a: ISO Media, Apple iTunes ALAC/AAC-LC (.M4A) Audio
test/Sade - The Big Unknown (Lyric Video) - YouTube-1.m4a: ISO Media, Apple iTunes ALAC/AAC-LC (.M4A) Audio

Just tried one - LMS 7.9.1 on pCP to SB2

send it through to the device ... and it thinks that I don't have one.

Odd, I renamed the files but kept the extension, and they play without
problem for me.

Ummm ... looking at my log file entry ... that error was for one with
.mp4 extension.
Ignore what I said ... something else odd going on.
They are definitely playing on SB2 right now and have .mp4 extension.

I'm baffled...

The files are suffixed as .m4a:

26006

They try to play for 3 seconds (progress timer advances), and then bail
with the errors in the log.

I renamed the extension as part of my test - see earlier post.

Ahh . . . now . . . listen, trying to play your untouched/untagged files

crashed squeezelite.

I was also using Home/Music Folder - which perhaps had something to do
with results changing.
After first play I expect it auto-scanned it in ... then I renamed the
files and then refreshed the folder view ... so maybe it failed again
but scanned it in and then it worked.

The two Sade file have the MP4 atoms which describe where the AAC frame
are located at the end of the file (i.e. after the mdat atom) and
streaming playing native such as suqeezelite and Touch need the MP4 atom
at the start of the mp4 file (i.e. before the mdat atom) . LMS streams
a file to a player starting at the beginning whereas PC based player
such as VLC - analyse the whole file before playing it.

ffmpeg can be used to convert a "problem" mp4 by moving the mp4 atoms
from the end to the start. This is known as the "faststart" option

Code:
--------------------

ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c copy -map 0 -movflags +faststart out.mp4

--------------------

If the file is trasncoded by LMS using faad then I think faad processes
the whole file before before streaming it as PCM>

It is possible to force Audacity to write out like that by choosing
(external program) as the file type when exporting.
Then putting the ffmpeg command line ...
ffmpeg -i - -movflags +faststart "%f"

Below is the resulting log ... and it worked first time when I told LMS
to play it to SB2 via Home/Music Folder.
It does make the process slower because of the 2nd pass but it worked.

Code:
--------------------

ffmpeg -i - -movflags +faststart "L:\music\TestTestTest\Sade - test.m4a"

The real test would be to playu onm squeezelite or Touch with a native
AAC.

I think the Sade tracks (with "bad" mdat position) posted played OK on
my SB receiver as it ihas to be processed by faad. I'll check again.

Thanks, the re-encoding resolved the issue.

FYI for future reference: these test files were opened and exported
Audio-only w/Quicktime. I figured it would just do the right thing.

I believe I inadvertently hijacked this thread. Apologies to the OP and
others.

Thanks to everyone for all the help provided.

There is no single "right" thing. What happened was perfect for a file
based player (I.e. the player has access to the file and can randomly go
anywhere in the file at any time while playing the file) - streaming
players are still "special" (i.e.players are fed the data serially -
one byte at a time from the beginning of the file to the end of file and
player has to start playing after receiving a relatively small number of
bytes) .

ongoing. I'll post a sample shortly for those that are curious but I'm
happy with simple re-encoding to 44.1KHz & have changed Audacity's
default to that.

Looks like my troubleshooting was flawed due to lack of use of both
software players. They do in fact play the files so it looks like the
problem is actually the Touch. I'll look further when I have time.

Odd.

Tried my backup Touch & that works. Both with the same firmware &
settings.

Factory reset the problem Touch & it still won't play the file. Now
relegated to the bottom of the "To do" list...

Please upload somewhere a copy or fragment of the file (or zip a
fragament and attach to a post) that doesn't work for you so it can be
analysed. Quickest way to find the problem.

Finally got to the bottom of this.

Finding that MP3 gapless playback was lost I discovered that the Touch's
"Audio Startup Time" in LMS > Player > Audio settings delays every track
& not just the first of a playlist as I would expect. This had
apparently been encountered before by 'Apesbrain'
who also found an issue with 48KHz files.

So just going back & retesting, altering this setting does indeed kill
48KHz files. No idea why that should be or whether it can be fixed? If
not then at least a warning should be incorporated into the info bubble
for the setting.
